Movement Quiz
Movement Quiz is a structure in which the class walks around and quizzes each other in constantly changing pairs: you find somebody who is also free, you ask each other one question in turn, and then everybody looks for a new partner. The questions live on cards in the students' hands — a different one each, changing owner after every conversation — or on the screen, where each round puts one question up for the whole class. Because somebody is talking in every pair, half the class is speaking at once: across five conversations a student says an answer out loud five times, where a whole-class quiz gives them one turn. It fits retrieval of what was taught, revision before a test, and getting a class on its feet without letting go of the content.
Check one thing before the first run: do you have at least as many cards as students, and does every card carry the answer as well as the question? A student without a card has nothing to trade, and without the answer on the back the asker cannot give feedback. No cards ready — or no printer to hand — then set the structure to "on the screen" in the settings: you type the questions yourself and print nothing.

Find a new partner — 20 seconds
Trade cards with your previous partner first; in the opening round there is nothing to trade yet, so you go straight to looking. Then walk around with your hand up for as long as you are free — raised hands find each other, so nobody has to choose. That trade is not a leftover at the end but the engine of the structure: without it everyone walks into the next round with the same question as the last.
Quiz your partner — 40 seconds
The screen says which of the two starts, and it alternates every round. That one reads the question off their card; the other answers and gets feedback from the answer printed on it — if the answer is wrong, read the right one out and put the question again.
Now your partner's question — 40 seconds
Roles reversed: now the other one asks, you answer and get the feedback. After that everybody looks for somebody new.
Every conversation is one round; how many conversations each student has is set in the preparation. Running the questions on the screen instead of on cards, the trade in step 1 falls away and the two turns answer the same question one after the other.
Why does this work?
Movement Quiz works because it multiplies answers: not one student per question, but half the class talking at the same time. Three things do the work — the retrieval itself, the simultaneity, and the journey a question makes through the room.
Pulling an answer out of your own memory fixes material more firmly than hearing or re-reading it. That is exactly what happens here, and it happens often: across five conversations every student formulates an answer out loud five times and hears five questions they would not have asked themselves. And it sounds different each time — by the third partner the answer is shorter and sharper than it was at the first. This is not a test: there is no grade attached, and a wrong answer costs nothing but ten seconds of explanation.
In a whole-class quiz one student answers each question while twenty-nine wait, and the one who makes themselves small never gets a turn. Here somebody is talking and somebody is listening in every pair, and after forty seconds those roles swap. That is simultaneity plus individual accountability — two of the principles Kagan builds his cooperative structures on: the structure gives everyone the floor, not the student's character. The movement in between is not decoration: attention runs along two paths, a directed one you hold with willpower and which runs out, and an undirected one that fires by itself at movement and novelty. Standing up and finding a new partner renews attention from below, free of charge to the student.
With cards the pair trades after every conversation, and that is the hinge of the structure: you walk on with your partner's question, so in round five you are asking a question you only just learned to answer. Without the trade everybody asks the same question all lesson and round ten is round one. Running the questions on the screen instead, there is nothing to trade: the whole class works on the same question each round, which makes the debrief easier (everybody knows what it was about) but costs the journey. For revision and test preparation the cards are therefore stronger; for one sharp question or statement the screen is enough.
When it fits, when to pick something else
When it fits
- To retrieve what was taught. For questions with one short, checkable answer: terms, dates, vocabulary, formulas, definitions. The answer is on the card, so the student asking is the expert for a minute — even if they only just read it themselves.
- As revision before a test. Thirty cards cover the material more broadly than one whole-class quiz, and every student sees five or six of them in ten minutes. What a student did not know, they hear straight away from somebody who did.
- As an energiser with content. The class gets up and talks — about the lesson material. Two or three conversations are enough to bring attention back in the middle of a long lesson.
- In a class where the same voices always speak. Nobody speaks to the whole group here — you speak to one person. For a student who never says anything in a class discussion, that is a completely different conversation from the one they avoid.
- To get a new group mixing. Put light questions on the cards and the structure does its second job: everybody talks to five classmates they did not choose themselves.
When to pick something else
- Not for open, thinking questions. A question that needs more than forty seconds, or whose answer does not fit on a card, stalls here: the pair barely starts before the next signal sounds. If you want the class to genuinely examine a question, take the snowball — there the answer is built up in stages, from the individual to the whole group.
- Not to measure who understands. You hear fragments of conversations, not a result: who ended up knowing which answer stays invisible, and that is by design. The function here is retrieval and practice. If you really need to know where the class stands, take a written answer from everyone — or use numbered minds, where a drawn number answers for the group.
- Not in a room where nobody can walk. The structure needs space to mix. If the class is locked into rows, there are two ways out: run it in the corridor or the hall, or take inner & outer circle, where only the outer circle moves one place along and a single circle is space enough.
- Not while the cards are still unfinished. A class standing around while you are still cutting paper has lost the structure before it starts. Two ways out: set it to "on the screen" and type five questions in the preparation, or let the students write the cards themselves — that makes a good first round and hands you material for the next lesson.
- Do not leave an odd number to chance. An odd number is not a problem but a decision you make in advance: join in yourself, or agree that one place becomes a three (the third asks along and listens to the answer). What you do not want is one student left waiting every round.

What exactly is the Movement Quiz structure?
A whole-class structure in which participants walk around and ask each other one question in constantly changing pairs. Every conversation runs the same three steps: find a new partner, ask your question and give feedback, then answer your partner's question. After that everybody looks for somebody new. The questions sit on cards in the students' hands — with the answer on the back, and after every conversation you trade cards — or on the screen, which puts one question up per round for the whole class.
How long does Movement Quiz take?
One conversation takes a minute and a half at the default times: 20 seconds to trade and find a new partner, and twice 40 seconds for the two questions. Five conversations fit into roughly twelve minutes, including handing out the cards and a short close. Whoever prepares the run sets the time per step and chooses the number of conversations — and it is that number, not the size of the class, that decides the length.
How many cards do I need?
At least as many as there are students — everybody starts with exactly one. All different cards works best, because then every conversation brings new material; a few duplicates are no problem. Every card carries the question and the answer, since the asker gives the feedback. For a class of thirty, thirty is the minimum and forty is comfortable. Make them in the card generator: eight cards per A4, with the answer on the back.
Can it run without cards?
Yes. Set the structure to "on the screen" in the settings and type your questions or statements, one per line — every line becomes one conversation. The class reads the question off the board, one of the two answers first (the screen says which, and that alternates every round) and then the other. You print nothing, and by the end the whole class knows what everybody was talking about. What you give up is the journey of the question: with cards every student holds a different question that travels the room, on the screen everybody works on the same one at the same time. For revision and test preparation the cards are therefore stronger.
How do you write good question cards?
One short question with exactly one right answer, and that answer on the back. No multiple choice (then nobody has to retrieve anything) and no open discussion question (forty seconds is too little for those). Aim for questions a student can answer in one or two sentences: terms, dates, vocabulary, formulas, steps in a process. The quickest way is the card generator — it carries a prompt written against the generator's own three boxes, so an AI's answer pastes in without any reformatting. Print on firm paper if you want to keep the set: it will last for years.
What do you do with an odd number of students?
Join in yourself — that is the simplest solution and you hear at once how the answers sound. If you cannot because you are keeping time, agree that one three will form: the third asks along and listens to the answer, and next round the three forms somewhere else. What you want to avoid is one student being left over every round and standing there waiting; that is the fastest way to spoil this structure for them.
How do you facilitate Movement Quiz?
Three things carry it. One: the raised hand. Without that signal half the class turns on the spot looking for who is free — hand up means "I am still looking", hands down as soon as you have found each other. Two: the trade. At the second conversation say out loud that the cards really do change hands, and watch that it happens; after that it runs by itself. Three: the feedback. Agree that "wrong" does not exist — you read the answer out and ask the question again. Which of the two starts is not yours to divide: the screen says it, and it alternates every round. You yourself walk around and listen: in two minutes you hear which terms have not landed. Do not step into a wrong answer the pair is already repairing.
What is the difference from Inner & Outer Circle?
Both put participants in changing pairs, but the changing works differently. In inner & outer circle two circles face each other and the outer one moves along one place: changing costs no time, everybody always has a partner, and you need little space. Here the class walks freely and finds a partner itself — that costs twenty seconds a round, but the pairs are unpredictable and the question travels with the card. Rule of thumb: same question with different partners, take the circles; many different questions, take this structure.
Where does the structure come from?
It belongs to the family of cooperative structures in which participants walk around and exchange knowledge in changing pairs; the card variant was described by Spencer Kagan, who built it on two principles that are clearly visible here: simultaneous participation (somebody is talking in every pair) and individual accountability (nobody can hide behind the group). Why the retrieval, the movement and the repetition across five conversations work, we checked against Uncommon Sense Teaching by Barbara Oakley, Beth Rogowsky and Terrence Sejnowski.
