Taking Turns
Taking Turns — known in cooperative learning as RoundRobin — is a structure in which a small group answers one question in turn: everyone first spends twenty seconds in silence thinking up as many answers as they can, and then the turn goes round, always the same way, one short answer per person. Anyone with nothing left says "pass" and the turn moves on; if your answer has already been named, you give the next one. Because the turn reaches everyone, nobody can hide and nobody can take the conversation over — and that is settled by the structure, not by the teacher. Meant to bring many short answers to the surface in a few minutes: prior knowledge, examples, terms, ideas.
Before the first run, check one thing: does the question fit the structure? Taking Turns needs a question with many different short answers — "name a mammal", not "what is a mammal". With a question that has one right answer, the first person is done and the rest say "pass". If in doubt, rewrite it as "name as many … as you can" or "give an example of …" — then the round runs itself.

Form groups — 90 seconds
Sit together in groups of the chosen size and agree who starts and which way the turn goes. That order holds for the whole structure, so only the first round spends time on it.
Quiet thinking about the question — 20 seconds
Everyone reads the question silently and works out as many answers as they can — say nothing yet, not even "oh, I know one!".
One answer each, in turn — 1 minute
The group goes round, always the same way: one answer each, then the next person. Anyone stuck says "pass" and the turn moves on.
Share with the class (optional) — 1 minute
One group — a different one each round — shares the answer that surprised them most. Everyone else listens and does not add to it.
Every question you enter becomes its own round. You set the group size yourself, from 2 to 6; that size is also the length of the round in turns, so from five on the answers need to be short. Sharing with the class is on by default; switch it off when time is tight.
Why does this work?
Taking Turns is the simplest cooperative structure there is, and that is exactly why it works: one rule — the turn goes round, in a fixed order — does all the work. Three things sit underneath it: the silence beforehand, the turn itself, and what the turn does to listening.
Without the twenty seconds of thinking time, the rest of the group first hears the fastest student's answer — and then there is nothing left to think up, only to vary. The classic wait-time research has shown since the 1970s that a few seconds of silence make answers noticeably richer. But here the silence does something more specific: the task is not "think of an answer" but "think of as many as you can". A student with a single answer who hears it go past can only say "pass"; a student with four stays in the game when the turn reaches them a second time. And pulling as many answers as you can out of your own head is exactly the retrieval that fixes material more firmly than another explanation — which is why the structure suits revision so well. Keep the silence short: after twenty seconds a group starts conferring on its own, and then it has become a conversation.
In an ordinary group conversation the fastest person talks and the rest wait for it to be over. Here the turn reaches everyone, in an order agreed in advance — so the quiet student gets as much room as the quick one, not because you steer it but because the structure settles it. That is what cooperative learning calls individual accountability: every student makes their own contribution visibly, and nobody can coast. At the same time every group runs in parallel, so in one minute a whole class has spoken — something that takes half an hour done as a class. "Pass" is part of it: a student who may say it out loud stays in the round instead of dropping out, and not knowing becomes ordinary.
Because the order is fixed, everyone knows exactly when their turn comes — and prepares. But there is a second effect: if your answer has already been named, you have to give the next one. So you follow what the others say, not out of politeness but because you need it to get through your own turn. Waiting stops being waiting. Keep the answers short, one term or one example: then working memory keeps up with the round and the pace stays high. In groups of five or six a lap takes so long that the last student has lost their answer before their turn arrives — which is why four is the default, and why larger groups hold answers strictly to one word.
When to use it — and when not
When it fits
- For open questions with many short answers. "Name as many European capitals as you can", "give an example of a mammal", "what do you already know about this chapter?" — that is what the structure was made for.
- To retrieve prior knowledge or revise. In a few minutes you see what is already there, without it turning plenary and slow. And the retrieving is the learning: a student who has to pull a term out of their own head remembers it better than one who hears it again.
- As a short activation in the middle of a lesson. Three questions, no material, everyone speaks — the block between two heavier parts of a lesson. That is exactly why the default is three rounds.
- In a group where the same voices always sound. The fixed order brings the quiet student forward without pointing at them: the turn simply reaches them, as it reaches everyone.
- As a run-up to a bigger conversation. First a round to collect answers, then the class discussion — so everyone has already said something before the debate starts, and more lands on the table than with a show of hands.
When it doesn't
- For a question with one right answer. Then the first person is done and the rest say "pass". Check beforehand that many answers really exist; if not, rewrite the question as "name as many … as you can" — or take Numbered Minds, where the group works towards one answer together and a random number explains it.
- When the group has to reach one shared answer. Taking Turns collects separate answers but does not negotiate: there is no step in which the group chooses. For consensus take the Placemat — everyone writes in their own section first, and the shared answer goes in the middle.
- When you want ideas collected in silence. In some groups talking crowds out thinking, and a spoken answer is gone once the round is over. For a written trace or a quiet class, take Written Thoughts: the same round, but on paper.
- When you want an opinion explored rather than collected. One short answer per turn leaves no room for "why". If you want students to probe and deepen, take the Inner & Outer Circle: the same question, but in conversation with a different partner each time.
- When a lap takes longer than a minute. In groups of five or six the last student waits so long that they forget their answer. Make two groups of three, or hold answers strictly to one word — the structure stays the same, only the lap gets short again.

What exactly is Taking Turns (RoundRobin)?
A cooperative structure in which a small group answers one question in turn. Every question runs the same round: first everyone spends twenty seconds in silence thinking up as many answers as they can, then the turn goes round — always the same way, one short answer per person, "pass" when you have nothing left — and optionally one group then shares with the class the answer that surprised it most. Every question you prepare becomes its own round. In cooperative learning this structure is called RoundRobin, after Spencer Kagan.
How long does Taking Turns take?
One question costs two minutes and twenty seconds with the default times: 20 seconds of thinking time, 1 minute of taking turns, 1 minute of sharing with the class. Add a one-off minute and a half to form the groups and agree the direction — the opening step before the first round. Three questions fit into about ten minutes, six into a quarter of an hour. Whoever prepares the structure sets the time per step, in steps of 15 seconds; a step set to 0 is skipped by the player, so if the groups are already seated, set the opening to 0.
What group size does this work for?
Two to six per group, with four as the default: enough difference in answers, no queue yet. In pairs the turn bounces back and forth, two or three times per person in a minute. From five on, a lap takes so long that the last student forgets their answer — hold answers strictly to one word then, or make two groups. The whole class works in groups at the same time, so thirty students have all spoken within one minute.
How do you write a good question for Taking Turns?
A good question has many different short answers, so four students taking turns can each name something different: "name as many … as you can", "give an example of …", "what do you already know about …". No yes/no questions and no questions with one right answer — then the first person is done. Prepare several questions in a row, each on its own line; every line becomes a round. If you are stuck, ask Microsoft Copilot: "Write 5 questions about [topic] for students aged [age] that allow many different short answers, so four students taking turns can each name something different. No yes/no questions and no questions with one right answer. One question per line, no numbering."
How do you facilitate Taking Turns?
Three things carry the structure. One: let the groups sit down and agree the direction — clockwise — before the first question appears; the player gives that its own step. Two: guard the silence in the thinking time and ask for as many answers as they can find, not for one. Three: let the groups go round on their own and do not walk the turn yourself — point at the screen when a group starts talking over each other. Say beforehand that "pass" is an ordinary answer; it keeps the round moving and makes not knowing normal. And when sharing, ask for the answer that surprised, not for "what did you have".
What is the difference between Taking Turns and Numbered Minds?
In Taking Turns everyone simply gives an answer in turn — the turn-taking is the whole structure, and the group collects. In Numbered Minds the group first confers on one answer together, and the teacher then calls a random number to explain it — so everyone is accountable for the whole. Take Taking Turns to collect many answers fast; Numbered Minds to make sure everyone understands one. The two also combine: first a lap of Taking Turns, then the joint answer.
What is the difference with On time?
Both give everyone the floor in a fixed order. The difference is what a turn is: in Taking Turns one short answer — a word, an example — and the turn moves straight on, often several laps in one minute. In On time every speaker gets their own clock, half a minute or more, to talk about a topic while the rest listen. Taking Turns collects; On time gets students to put things into words.
Can it run without typed questions?
Yes. Leave the question field empty and choose only the number of rounds: you ask the questions out loud yourself, let a student think one up, or put them on cards on the table. The screen then shows the step, the instruction and the clock, and the group answers the question of that moment. Handy for a question that comes up during the lesson — and for a class that thinks up the questions itself.
Can you grade this?
Better not, and that is not politeness but how the structure works. Taking Turns shows what a group can retrieve, and that retrieving is the learning; as soon as a grade hangs on it, "pass" becomes a mistake and the group starts whispering answers to each other. Use what you hear as information — which term comes up in no group at all? — and not as assessment. If you want to know what an individual student knows, take a written answer from everyone.
Does Taking Turns work online?
Yes, in breakout rooms of four. Agree the order beforehand — the list of names on screen is the direction — and keep microphones off during the thinking time. One thing changes: online, "pass" is harder to say, because a silence at a distance feels longer. So say emphatically that pass is an ordinary answer, and have each speaker name the next person so the turn does not stall.
Where does the structure come from?
Taking Turns is RoundRobin, one of the basic structures of Spencer Kagan's cooperative learning; its pair version is called RallyRobin.
