Stand Up & Sit Down

Stand Up & Sit Down is a structure in which the class answers with its body: after each statement everyone first thinks in silence, and on one signal whoever agrees stands up and whoever disagrees stays seated. A few participants from both groups then explain their choice, and optionally anyone convinced by the arguments may still change position. Because everyone chooses at the same time and nobody can hide behind anyone else, you see at a glance where the class stands — and the lesson gets movement into it. It fits opinions, a plain vote instead of a show of hands, and retrieving material already covered or bringing a misconception into the open.

Before the first run, check one thing: is it safe to stand up in this class — is it all right to be wrong, is it all right to differ from the majority? If that confidence isn't there yet, name it at the start and be ready to back the student who ends up standing alone: give them the floor first, thank them for the nerve, show that a different position is an asset here and not a risk.

Every statement you enter becomes its own round with these steps; the switching round is on by default and can be turned off.

Why does this work?

Stand Up & Sit Down works because it makes answering physical and simultaneous: everyone chooses, everyone sees everyone's choice, and nobody has to take the floor to do so. Three things do the work here — attention, working memory and the group.

The silence protects against the group

Without those silent seconds, half the class first watches which way the most popular student moves. Classic wait-time research has shown since the seventies that a few extra seconds measurably enrich the answers. But the silence does two more things here. Working memory holds only a few items at once, so the statement has to stay on screen — otherwise part of that capacity goes into holding the wording rather than into the decision itself. And the larger the group, the fewer ideas of their own people generate and the worse they take in other people's — the same effect that kills classic brainstorming. So that half minute is not politeness towards the slower thinkers, but protection against a structural group effect.

The body chooses, so everyone takes part

With a show of hands a third doesn't join in and nobody sees it. Here half-hearted doesn't exist: you stand or you sit, all at the same time, on one signal. So every student answers every statement — including the one who never says a word in a class discussion. The movement adds one more thing. Attention runs along two paths: a voluntary one you hold with willpower and which depletes, and an involuntary one that fires by itself at movement, sound or surprise. A scene that stays the same for long forces students to hold focus by effort; standing up renews attention from below, free of charge to the student. The structure doesn't demand attention — it supplies it. Only, the movement works here not on its own, but because it is coupled to an act of thinking.

Switching makes listening visible

The optional switching round is where the structure earns its keep: whoever stands up or sits down after the explanations shows the whole class that an argument did something. If the statement did have a right answer, this is also the natural place to repair it — there is no shame in sitting down once you've heard the argument. But that only works when switching costs nothing — and what it costs differs sharply with age (By age group). So say beforehand that changing your mind is not losing, and never ask why someone was "wrong" at first. And if nobody switches, that too is information, not a failure.

When to use it — and when not

When it fits

  • As the opening of a topic. Three statements and in five minutes you see where the class stands — including the students you otherwise never hear.
  • To retrieve material already covered. The silent seconds are an attempt to pull it out of your own memory rather than hear it ready-made, and that retrieval fixes the material more firmly than another explanation would. It is retrieval, not a test: no grade attached.
  • As an energiser halfway through the lesson. The class literally gets up; two or three statements about the lesson material are enough to bring the attention back.
  • In groups where the same voices always sound. Everyone answers with their body, so taking part costs no speaking courage — and the explanation afterwards is voluntary. That is individual accountability — one of the principles Kagan builds cooperative structures on: here the structure supplies it rather than the student's character.
  • As a warm-up before a discussion or debate. The positions are already standing in the room before the conversation starts; all you have to ask is who wants to tell why they are standing.

When it doesn't

  • Not to measure knowledge. A public, simultaneous gesture does not measure who understood: a confident beginner with a short run of success genuinely overrates themselves, and an unsure student will not reveal a gap in front of classmates. "Show me if it's clear" therefore lies in both directions — and the friendlier the class, the more convincingly it lies. The function here is a different one: retrieving, activating, bringing a misconception into the open so the class can talk it through. It is not a test and there is no grade attached. If you need to know who understood, take a written answer from everyone.
  • Not with bare facts. There is nothing to think about in "the earth orbits the sun" — whoever sits is simply wrong, and the round turns into an oral quiz. The difference is not whether a right answer exists, but whether there is anything left to say after the choice: "a fraction and a decimal are the same number written differently" does take thinking. To drill purely factual knowledge with movement, take the movement quiz.
  • Not with sensitive or personal statements. Everyone sees everyone's choice — anonymity does not exist here by definition. For a subject that stings, take the snowball: it moves from the personal to the shared step by step, so nobody has to expose a position to the whole room at once.
  • Not when you want real depth. Standing or sitting is a position, not an argument. If you want the class to examine an opinion rather than show it, take the inner & outer circle: in the circles everyone discusses the same question in turn with several different partners, and that is how you find out how things actually stand.
  • Not when not everyone can stand. Agree on one alternative way of answering for the whole class — hand up, arm stretched — and have nobody stand. Simpler still: hand out the ✓/✗ voting cards from the basic set, and a student raises a card instead of standing up. One student who alone answers differently stands out; a class that all does the same does not.

One structure, different functions

As a warm-up, with statements about material already covered. The silent seconds are an attempt to retrieve it yourself rather than hear it; that retrieval fixes the material more firmly than another explanation. Working memory is barely loaded, so the structure also runs in a "cold" class where heavier work won't land yet.
Entering a new topic, with statements about material not yet taught. Guessing before the explanation is not an error but a hook: once you have taken a position, the lesson answers your own question rather than nobody's. And it shows you what the class walks into the topic with.
After the explanation, with statements about understanding. Here the work is done not by the choice but by the explanation step: "agree" is a 50 % guess, "I am standing because…" shows how someone reasons. Just remember this is a conversation about understanding, not a measurement of it.
With values statements, in mentor time. The function is no longer about memory but about the group: the class sees itself in one second, without a round of questions — and sees that the positions differ.
As a frame around a lesson series. The same statements at the start and at the end: the student meets their own earlier position. That is work on how they think, not on what they know.

Variants

With a switching round switch the reconsider phase on: after the explanations anyone convinced may still change position. Ask the switcher which argument did it — never why they were "wrong" at first.
With another way of answering hand up, arm stretched, or the ✓/✗ voting cards from the basic set instead of standing — for rooms with fixed benches or when not everyone can stand. One way for the whole class.
As a series frame the same three statements at the start and the end of a lesson series: the class sees for itself what happened to the positions along the way.
With pair talk let pairs confer briefly before the signal and still choose individually: the conversation sharpens the choice, but the choice stays everyone's own. Raise the "Thinking" step in the settings when you do — the default 30 seconds are sized for silent thinking, a short pair conference needs 45 to 60. And tell the class that the line on screen ("no conferring yet") does not apply today.
With a written closing after the last statement everyone writes a short answer to one question — which statement made you hesitate most, or what do you now think differently. A lesson consolidates precisely before the switch, and that is exactly the part that usually disappears into the bell; on top of that you keep a trace that doesn't depend on who dared to speak. If you use the structure as a frame around a series, these notes are the bridge to the next lesson.
Four positions if you want more nuance than agree/disagree, give each corner of the room its own position — that is the four corners structure.

By age group

Early years (4–6). Not suitable if you want to see where the group stands. They do not read the statement themselves, so it is gone the moment you have said it, and at this age they look at their neighbour openly and without embarrassment: what you see is not what the class thinks. As a movement moment with a question attached it does work — two or three statements, explanations of three words, and the switching round skips you. From age 6 the structure delivers what it promises.
Primary (6–12). Here it works as intended for the first time: they read along from the screen, explain in a sentence, and understand switching. The price of standing up is still low — this is the safest age for the structure. Do give a sentence starter ("I am standing because…"), or the explanation turns into a retelling of the statement.
Early adolescence (12–15). Peak conformity and peak price of a public position: looking stupid in front of peers is the most reliable way to switch off the willingness to take a risk for a long time, and it costs a teenager more than an adult in the room assumes. Everything written above about safety stops being optional here: the simultaneous signal is not a formality but the only thing keeping the class from looking at the most popular student first. And this is also where the gain is largest: the class sees for the first time that opinions differ.
Older teens (15–18). They can handle "how could we check that?" and hold nuance — and the nuance is precisely the problem: "it depends" becomes the default answer. The statements need to be sharper, and this is where a statement ripens fastest into four corners.
Adults: team meetings, training. They stay seated not out of fear but out of dignity — "I am not a schoolchild here". Name that out loud first and the resistance mostly goes. The switching round is exactly where adults dig in hardest, and exactly where it is most valuable.

Common mistakes

Statements that are really facts. If nearly everyone picks the same side and nobody hesitates, it was a fact, not a statement. Note it down and rephrase for next time.
Repeating or explaining the statement. Every explanation colours the choice. Read it once, leave it on screen, stay silent: as long as the statement is visible, working memory goes to the decision and not to recalling the wording.
Not choosing simultaneously. Whoever may look before choosing picks what the most popular student picked. One clear signal, everyone at once.
Giving the floor only to the majority. Always ask for explanations from both groups, even when only two are standing. A minority never given the floor learns that standing up is a risk.
Reacting to positions yourself. One raised eyebrow from the facilitator and on the next statement the class picks what you want to hear. Say beforehand that what interests you is not who guessed right but why each person decided that way — and behave accordingly.
Turning the structure into an assessment. The most common distortion: comprehension questions replace statements, and the class honestly shows you not what it knows but how confident it feels. The moment a grade hangs on standing up, the honesty of the choice goes with it. If you need data, take a written answer from everyone.
Too many statements. After about six the ritual becomes routine and the explanations flat. Four statements with real explanations beat ten without.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Stand Up & Sit Down?

A whole-class structure in which participants respond to statements with their body: whoever agrees stands up, whoever disagrees stays seated. Every statement runs through the same round — silent thinking, choosing position all at once, a few explanations from both groups, and a switching moment for anyone convinced by the arguments. Every statement you enter becomes its own round.

How long does it take?

One statement with the default times costs a minute and a half: 30 seconds thinking time, 15 seconds to choose position, 30 seconds for the explanations and 15 seconds to switch. Six statements therefore fit into a quarter of an hour, including the reading out and the transitions. Whoever prepares the structure sets the time per step, in steps of 15 seconds.

What group size does this work for?

From about eight participants, and upwards it scales effortlessly: forty people choose position as quickly as twelve. Only the explanation round stays the same — two or three voices from each group, however large the class. With very large groups the picture is actually clearer, because the split can be read at a glance.

Can you grade this?

No — and that is what the structure rests on. Standing up shows a position or an attempt to retrieve something, not a level of knowledge: a public, simultaneous gesture is distorted just as much by excess confidence as by the fear of looking stupid in front of classmates. The moment marks are attached to it, the class stops choosing honestly and starts guessing what you want to see. So it is retrieval, not a test. If you need an assessment, take a written answer from everyone; there the signal really is about knowledge.

What is the difference with Four Corners?

Both make positions physically visible, but four corners offers four answer options and moves the class through the room; Stand Up & Sit Down is binary — agree or disagree — and everyone stays in place. That makes Stand Up & Sit Down faster and sharper (there is no escape corner "partly agree"), and four corners more nuanced. Rule of thumb: start with Stand Up & Sit Down; if the class keeps wanting to say "it depends", the statement is ripe for four corners.

How do you phrase a good statement?

A good statement is a claim — not a question and not a fact — that you expect to split the class, and sharp enough that "it depends" is not the default answer. "Homework is useful" is too broad; "homework should never count towards your grade" divides. Order your statements from light to serious: the first rounds warm the class up and show it that standing here is safe — only then does a statement about something weighty make sense. Out of ideas? Ask Microsoft Copilot: "Write 6 statements about [topic] for students aged [age], ordered from light to serious. Each must be able to split the class: not a fact and not a question, but a claim you can agree or disagree with and that still leaves something to say after the choice. Avoid personal or sensitive ground: everyone sees everyone's position. One statement per line, no numbering." Every line becomes its own round.

How do you facilitate Stand Up & Sit Down?

Three things carry the structure. One: read the statement out once and then say nothing — repeating invites "what exactly do you mean?", and that question dismantles the statement. Two: have everyone choose at once, on one signal, or the class first watches the most popular student. Three: ask for explanations from both groups and have them start with "I am standing because…" — the task is to explain your own position, not to attack someone else's. Watch that it doesn't slide into attack or self-defence: you ask the questions, not the students of each other. And if the statement does have a right answer, don't announce it yourself — ask the class: "how could we check this?" Then the round trains critical thinking rather than memory.

What if a student cannot stand?

Choose one alternative way of answering for the whole class — hand up for agree, hand on the table for disagree — and have nobody stand. Simpler still: hand everyone the ✓/✗ voting cards from the basic set and let the class vote with cards. The point of the structure is that everyone answers simultaneously and equally; one student who alone does something different is exactly what stands out. With an agreed class method nothing else about the structure changes.

Does it work online?

Yes — the brain is the same online as in the room, so the principles don't change with the environment, only the gesture does. But make sure both sides press something. If only the agreeing side raises a hand, disagreement is indistinguishable from didn't-manage-it or stepped-away. Assign two reactions up front — say a heart for agree and a smiley for disagree — and keep them equally neutral: give disagreement a thumbs-down and disagreeing immediately costs more. Keep the order intact: silent thinking with microphones off, then everyone at once on your signal. The explanations go through the microphone, two or three voices per side.

Where does the structure come from?

Stand Up & Sit Down belongs to the family of movement and statement structures in cooperative learning — voting with your body exists in many variants, from agree/disagree lines to corner work; together that family is the statement structures set, where the overview lives.
