Pair Coach

Pair Coach is a cooperative structure in which two students work through exercises in turn: one solves out loud, the other watches and coaches. The solver says what they are doing at every step, and after each exercise the roles turn over — whoever just coached solves the next one. Because the thinking is audible, the coach hears exactly where it stalls — and can ask about it within half a minute, instead of the mistake surfacing days later when the work is marked. It is built for practice material with more than one step: equations, parsing a sentence, a line of reasoning, a calculation.

Check one thing before the first run: do your exercises have more than one step? Pair Coach lives on what there is to hear between the question and the answer. In "7 × 8" there is nothing to coach — the answer is there or it is not. In "solve 3x² + 5x − 2 = 0" or "parse this sentence" there is plenty to see along the way. If you are unsure about your set, take one exercise and say it out loud yourself: if it takes more than one sentence, it will work.

Form pairs — 1.5 minutes

Once, before the first exercise: find a partner and agree who is A and who is B — A starts as the solver, B is the first coach. If the pairs are already sitting together, set this step to ‘none’ and it disappears.

Quiet thinking first — 30 seconds

Every new exercise starts with a role swap: whoever coached now solves — in the first exercise you simply agree who starts. Then both read the exercise and work out how they would start — the coach too, because anyone without an approach of their own can only check the answer.

Solve it out loud — 100 seconds

The solver works and says what they are doing: first what they see, then what they do. The coach watches and does not help yet. If you want the coach to be able to ask during the solving, choose "the coach thinks along" — step 4 then folds into this step, and the coach may ask a question the moment it stalls.

The coach responds — 45 seconds

Only under "listen first, respond after" — under "the coach thinks along" this is part of step 3. One question about the approach — "why did you take that step?" — and one thing that went well. The coach does not give the answer away.

Check the answer together (optional) — 45 seconds

Set to ‘none’ by default; a tap on + switches it on, when there is one right answer. Is the answer right? If not, find the step where it went wrong together and say what you will do differently next time.

Every exercise you set up becomes its own round, and the roles turn over after each one — with an even number of exercises both students solve equally often. If the exercises are in the book, leave the field empty and just choose how many the pairs work through. The checking step is off by default; switch it on when there is one right answer.

Why does this work?

Pair Coach looks like two students doing homework together, but three things are arranged differently: the thinking happens out loud, there is a coach who may not give the answer away, and the roles turn over. Together those three are the difference between two students working next to each other and two who are of use to each other.

Both think first — the coach too

The thirty seconds of quiet thinking are not a warm-up for the solver. They are there above all for the coach: anyone who has not worked out an approach of their own can afterwards only check the answer, and that is something else entirely than coaching. Someone who does have an approach in mind hears at once that the other is taking a different route — and that is what the good questions are about. The classic wait time research showed decades ago that a few seconds of silence make answers richer; here the silence does something more specific as well, because it holds back the coach who would otherwise start helping at the first word. From the second exercise on, this step opens with the role swap: whoever coached now solves, and both read the new exercise.

Half a minute between the error and the response

What practice is worth depends heavily on how quickly you find out that something went wrong. Book in, book out, a red mark two days later: by then the student has long lost the thread of their own reasoning and can only copy the right answer. Here there is at most half a minute in between — the coach responds while the reasoning is still fresh, and the solver still knows exactly WHY they took that step. That is why the coaching step is short and is about the approach rather than the answer: one question ("why did you take that step?") and one thing that went well. A coach who gives the answer away removes precisely this — and then there is again one student who knows and one who copies.

Thinking aloud shows what an exercise book hides

In a worked-out sum you can see where it went wrong, but not why. Solving out loud makes the intermediate steps audible: which approach someone chose, where they hesitated, which step they skipped because it seemed obvious. That is information no exercise book holds — and not only for the coach. Walk around and listen in: if the same step goes wrong in three pairs, you have just found your next five minutes of whole-class explanation, and it will be targeted rather than general. For the student it works the other way round too: putting your own reasoning into words forces you to finish it, and the step you silently skipped turns out to be the one you do not yet understand.

Two ways to coach — your call

The coach can take part in two ways, and which one fits depends on this group and this task. You choose it in the preparation, and the player adjusts the steps.

Listen first, respond after. Two steps: the coach stays silent during the solving and responds afterwards — one question about the approach, one thing that went well. That is how you hear how far someone gets on their own, and the solver has to carry their reasoning to the end themselves. This is the default, and the structure as Kagan describes it.

The coach thinks along while solving. One step: the coach may ask a question the moment it stalls — no pointing, no telling — and closes with one thing that went well. For a class that would otherwise sit silent for a minute once the solver is stuck at second ten. What you give up: the moment someone has to find the way out themselves.

A rule of thumb: new material and solvers who stall quickly — think along; revision, test preparation and anything where you want to see what someone can do alone — listen first. The coaching rule is the same either way: ask, do not point, do not tell.

When it fits, what to watch for

When it fits

  • For practice material with more than one step. Equations, sentence parsing, a calculation with units, a line of argument in an essay — anything where the route to the answer is more interesting than the answer. There is something to hear, and so something to coach.
  • Right after your explanation. You have just modelled an approach and want to know whether it landed. Ten minutes of Pair Coach let you hear who can put the steps into words and who memorised the shape of your example without the reason — two things that look identical on paper.
  • When you want to know WHERE it stalls. Not whether it goes wrong, but at which step. Walk around, listen in on three pairs, and you have your next explanation — aimed at one place instead of the whole topic.
  • When preparing for a test or going over homework. The exercises are already in the book, so you type nothing: you only set how many and how long. Two students who hear each other's approach get more out of the same set than two working through it in silence.
  • In a mentor or tutor session, with open questions. Switch on "both answer the same question": every line then counts as two rounds and they answer the same question in turn. Where no answer is wrong — "what do you want to do after the summer?" — there is no next exercise to move on to, and this is how the structure serves that kind of conversation.

What to watch for

  • For single-step exercises, pick something that takes longer than a second. With times tables or isolated words the answer is there or it is not, and the coach has nothing to do. Take exercises with an intermediate step — or, if speed is exactly what you want to train, flashcards: there the short answer is the point and repetition at pace is what works.
  • Without a modelled approach, do one exercise with the whole class first. Only someone who roughly knows how it is done can coach; on brand-new material two students will coach each other into the same misconception. Solve the first exercise out loud together with the class, and let them do the second in pairs. If the material is entirely new, it needs instruction first — or read and ask, where understanding itself is the task.
  • If the class has to reach one shared answer, use a structure with a discussion step. Pair Coach keeps two separate solvers: there is no moment where the pair agrees on something together. If you want a group to reach consensus and everyone to be able to explain it, take numbered minds or the placemat.
  • With an odd number of students, make one trio in advance. In a trio two coaches watch the same solver, and the solving role moves on. Better than joining in yourself: then nobody is keeping time and nobody is walking around to hear where it stalls.
  • If the thinking aloud does not get going, give it two exercises. The first time it is awkward — letting others hear your own thinking is awkward for adults too. Model one yourself, hesitations and all, and make it clear that a pause in the middle is allowed. After two exercises it has become ordinary; anyone still silent then usually has no approach and no way of saying so.

One structure, several functions

As practice straight after your instruction. The material has just been explained, the approach is on the board, and four exercises let you hear whether it landed. This is what the structure was built for, and where it returns the most per minute.
As a warm-up on last week's material. Two exercises from the previous chapter at the start of the lesson: retrieving from your own memory is what makes it stick, and you hear immediately what has faded in a week — before you build on something that is no longer there.
As revision before a test. The set is already in the book, so you type nothing: you only set the number of exercises. What makes a revision lesson different from silent practice is that every student has to put their approach into words at least twice — which is exactly what the test will ask of them.
As a way of going over homework. Not "mark what is wrong", but: explain in turn how you got to your answer. Two students with different answers find for themselves the point where their approaches diverged — and that is what the marking should have been about.
In a mentor session, as a conversation in pairs. With "both answer the same question" switched on, the structure becomes a conversation: one asks and listens, the other answers, and then the other way round. The coaching rule — ask, do not tell — is then itself the skill being practised.

Variations

With or without the checking step "check together" is off by default. Switch it on when there is one right answer: the pair compares its result with the answer key and looks together for the step where it went wrong. Hand out that key only at this point — given earlier it gets copied instead of checked.
Without typed exercises leave the field empty and only choose how many exercises the pairs work through. The exercises then live in the book, on a worksheet or in the platform your class works in — the screen gives the step, the role and the clock, and you say which set is up.
Both answer the same question every line counts as two rounds: first one answers out loud, then the other gets the same question. For open questions with no single right answer — mentoring, reflection, a discussion question about a text — because there is no next exercise to move on to.
Coaching cards on the desk put three questions a coach is allowed to ask on each pair's desk: "why did you take that step?", "what would happen if…?", "can you say that differently?". A class not yet used to coaching falls back on telling without them — and with them you hear the difference within two exercises.
In a trio for an odd number: one solver, two coaches watching. They have to ask one question between them — which forces them to agree on what the most useful question is, and that is an exercise in itself. The solving role moves on each exercise so all three get a turn.
As the fixed second half of your explanation not as a separate structure but as a standing part of the lesson: ten minutes of explanation, ten minutes of Pair Coach, every lesson. The class then knows the roles by heart, the start-up costs no time, and you have a moment every lesson where you hear how the thinking is going.
With the participant sheet everyone gets one sheet: per exercise, the question their coach asked and the place their thinking stalled. The working out stays in their own book — what the sheet keeps is exactly what otherwise disappears, and it is the line to have them reread before the next lesson.

By age

Early years (4–6). Too early: coaching asks you to set your own approach aside for a moment and look at someone else's. What does work is the seed of it — "tell me how you did that" — with you as the coach, in a small group. The structure itself comes later.
Primary (7–12). Workable here, provided you keep the coaching role small. Give one question the coach may ask ("why did you do it that way?") and one instruction ("name one thing that went well"), nothing more. Arithmetic with intermediate steps is the best first material: there is something to hear, and the answer is objective.
Lower secondary (12–15). The age at which "I don't know" is hardest to say out loud. So say in advance that getting stuck is the point — that is the moment the coach has something to do — and keep the time per exercise short so a silence never lasts long. Change the pairs between lessons, or a fixed couple forms in which the same one is always stronger.
Upper secondary (15–18). Here the coaching role can become genuinely substantive: let the coach ask not only about the step but about the choice — "why that formula and not the other?". On exam material it works especially well, because putting an approach into words is exactly what an exam asks for. Longer exercises are fine: set the solving time to two or three minutes.
Adults: training, higher education, teams. With adults the coaching role is the hard part, not the solving: the urge to just show them is strong. Agree that the coach only asks questions and that the solver gets to find their own mistake. Works well for software, procedures and case work — anywhere someone performs a sequence another person can follow.

Common mistakes

The coach gives the answer away. Then there is again one student who knows and one who copies, and the structure has turned into an ordinary explanation. Ask the coach for a question, not a correction — and say beforehand that helping here means something other than telling how it is done.
Letting only the solver think. Anyone who thinks of nothing during the quiet time can afterwards only check the answer. The thinking time is for both; that is why it is a step with a clock of its own rather than an option.
Single-step exercises. "7 × 8" or an isolated word gives the coach nothing to talk about. Choose exercises with a route in them — then there is something to hear and so something to ask.
Discovering the odd number in the classroom. Make one trio with two coaches in advance. Joining in yourself sounds kind, but then nobody is keeping time and nobody is walking around listening — and that walking around is where your return is.
Talking on after the role swap. The previous solver wants to finish their exercise and the new one never gets a turn. The screen says whose turn it is; point at it instead of repeating it.
Always the same pairs. In a fixed couple the stronger one becomes the standing coach, even if the roles turn over on paper. Change pairs between lessons, or make them at random — then everyone hears an approach unlike their own at least once.
Handing out the answer key too early. If the key is on the desk during the solving, it gets copied instead of reasoned through. Hand it out at the checking step, if that step is on.
Trying to get through every exercise. Four properly coached exercises are worth more than ten rushed ones. Rather set the time per step a little wider and the number lower — the rest of the set can be done silently and individually if it has to be finished anyway.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pair Coach structure exactly?

A cooperative structure in which two students work through exercises in turn, in fixed roles. Every exercise runs the same round: both think quietly for thirty seconds first, then one solves out loud while saying what they are doing, after which the coach responds with one question about the approach and one thing that went well — and optionally they check the answer together. On the next exercise the roles turn over. In cooperative learning this structure is known as RallyCoach, from the work of Spencer Kagan.

How long does Pair Coach take?

One exercise costs almost three minutes at the default times: 30 seconds of quiet thinking, 1 minute 40 solving out loud, 45 seconds of coaching. Add a one-off minute and a half to form the pairs and agree who is A and who is B. Four exercises make a block of about a quarter of an hour, two exercises a ten-minute filler. Switch the checking step on and add three quarters of a minute per exercise. Whoever prepares the run sets every step themselves, in steps of 15 seconds; a step set to 0 is skipped by the player, so if the pairs are already sitting together, set the opening to 0.

How many exercises should you prepare?

Four is a good start: that fills a quarter of an hour and gives both students two turns as solver. Prefer an even number, because the roles turn over per exercise — with an odd number one of them solves once more than the other. If you run out of time, stop early without worrying: four properly coached exercises are worth more than eight rushed ones. Put them in increasing order of difficulty, so both students have an easy one to start on.

Do you have to type the exercises in?

No. If they are in the book, on a worksheet or in the platform your class works in, leave the field empty and only choose how many exercises the pairs work through. The screen then shows the step, the role and the clock, and you say which set is up. If you do type them in — one per line — every exercise appears in large type on the board, and everyone knows where the class is without asking.

How do you stop the coach from just giving the answer?

By making the coaching role small and concrete. The instruction is: ask one question about the approach ("why did you take that step?") and name one thing that went well. Not: help your partner. With a class new to this it helps to put a card with three coaching questions on each desk — then nobody falls back on telling simply because they do not know what else to say. And say it out loud once: giving the answer away is not a favour, because then there is again one who knows and one who writes it down.

May the coach help during the solving as well?

Not by default: the coach listens and only responds afterwards, and that is exactly what forces the solver to finish their own reasoning. But there is a setting for it — "the coach thinks along" — and then the two steps become one: the coach may ask a question the moment it stalls. The rule stays the same: ask, do not point, do not tell. Choose it for a class that would otherwise sit silent for a minute as soon as someone is stuck, and not when you want to hear how far someone gets on their own — that is precisely what the coach's silence shows.

What do you do with an odd number of students?

Make one trio: one solver and two coaches watching. Yes, with the "both answer the same question" setting. Every line then counts as two rounds: first one answers out loud, then the other gets the same question. That is needed because an open question has no next exercise to move on to — the question stays up and the roles turn over around it. It makes the structure usable in mentoring, reflection and discussion questions about a text: the coaching rule — ask, do not tell — is then itself the skill being practised.

What is the difference with flashcards?

What there is to practise. Flashcards train the fast, short answer: words, dates, formulas — the answer is there in a second or it is not, and repetition at pace is the point. Pair Coach trains the ROUTE to the answer, and therefore needs exercises with more than one step; the gain is in what gets said out loud between the question and the result. For a revision lesson they are often used back to back: facts with cards first, then the problems with a coach alongside.

What is the difference with taking turns?

Taking turns collects: a small group answers one open question in turn, and the structure makes sure everyone says something. Pair Coach practises: one student works through a problem while the other watches and asks on. Take taking turns to hear a lot quickly — prior knowledge, examples, concepts; take Pair Coach when it is about the execution and you want to know where that stalls.

Should you grade this?

Better not, and not out of politeness. This structure lives on students saying out loud what they do not yet understand; the moment a grade hangs on it, getting stuck becomes a mistake and the solver only starts talking once the answer is already there. Use what you hear as information for your next explanation — which step goes wrong in several pairs? — and not as assessment. If you want to know what an individual student can do, set a written task.

Does Pair Coach work online?

Yes, in breakout rooms of two, and it is one of the structures that loses least online: there is no material, no movement, and screen sharing replaces looking over into someone's book. Two things to agree: the solver shares their screen or keeps their paper in view, and the coach turns the microphone on but keeps their hands still. Allow a little more time per exercise — reading along at a distance is slower than sitting side by side.

Where does this structure come from?

Pair Coach is our name for RallyCoach, one of the structures from Spencer Kagan's cooperative learning. The principle beneath it — equal participation and individual accountability — is what separates it from doing homework together: both students make their own visible contribution, in two roles that ask different things. The quiet thinking time goes back to Mary Budd Rowe's wait time research; why the speed of feedback matters so much when practising a procedure we checked against Uncommon Sense Teaching by Barbara Oakley, Beth Rogowsky and Terrence Sejnowski.
